Deep inside a mountain in Arctic Norway, the world's crop diversity and some of humanity's most important data are being preserved for the future. Here's the story of Svalbard's remarkable 鈥渄oomsday vaults.鈥
High above the airport outside Longyearbyen, a concrete structure appears to stick straight out of the frozen mountainside. Behind it, a tunnel disappears deep into Plat氓berget.

This is the entrance to the聽Svalbard Global Seed Vault, perhaps the world's most famous insurance policy. More than 1.4 million seed samples are stored inside the mountain as backups for agricultural collections around the world.
But seeds aren't the only thing being preserved beneath the Arctic landscape.
Nearby, deep inside a former coal mine in the same mountain, the聽Arctic World Archive聽safeguards documents, artworks, computer code and other important digital records intended to survive for centuries.
Together, they have given this remote corner of Svalbard an extraordinary role: protecting pieces of humanity's biological and cultural inheritance against whatever the future might bring.
Hence the irresistible nickname:聽the doomsday vaults.
Why Build Doomsday Vaults on Svalbard?
Svalbard lies approximately halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.
That remoteness is part of its appeal for long-term storage, but Svalbard isn't completely inaccessible. The town of Longyearbyen has an airport, roads, communications infrastructure and a permanent community.
The mountains surrounding the settlement provide something even more useful: cold, stable rock and permafrost.
Put something deep inside a mountain here and it is naturally protected from many of the threats faced by a conventional building.
That combination of isolation and accessibility has made Svalbard an attractive place to think very, very long term. In fact, the idea predates both of today's famous vaults.
In 1984, the Nordic Gene Bank began an experiment storing seeds inside the disused Mine 3 near Longyearbyen. Samples are periodically removed to test how well the seeds survive naturally in the cold mountain environment.
That early work helped pave the way for something far more ambitious.
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault
The opened in February 2008. Its purpose is remarkably simple:聽to provide a backup of the world's existing seed banks.
Genebanks around the world maintain collections of different crop varieties. These collections are valuable because genetic diversity can help farmers and scientists respond to disease, changing climates and other challenges.
But individual genebanks can themselves be vulnerable to war, natural disasters, equipment failures, funding problems and simple human error. Svalbard provides another layer of protection.
Institutions send duplicate seed samples north, where they are stored deep inside Plat氓berget. The organisation depositing the seeds retains ownership and is the only one entitled to withdraw them.

Think of the Seed Vault less as a giant agricultural museum and more as an聽off-site backup.
What's Actually Inside the Seed Vault?
Seeds! Okay, okay, I'll be serious. As of June 2026, the vault held聽1,401,285 seed samples from 134 depositors, representing 6,539 species.
Those samples include varieties of major crops such as rice, wheat, maize, barley, beans and sorghum, together with vegetables, traditional crops and wild relatives of cultivated plants.
Importantly, a 鈥渟eed sample鈥 doesn't mean one seed. A sample contains many individual seeds from one particular crop variety. The entire facility has capacity for about聽4.5 million samples, representing as many as 2.25 billion individual seeds.
Not every food plant can be stored this way. The vault primarily accepts so-called聽orthodox seeds, which can survive being dried and then kept at very low temperatures.
Crops including coffee, cocoa, coconut and mango have seeds that cannot tolerate these conditions, while crops such as bananas and many potatoes are generally preserved in other ways.
So despite its nickname, the Seed Vault isn't literally a collection of everything we would need to restart agriculture after an apocalypse. It's an enormous backup of global聽crop diversity. That's arguably much more useful.
Inside the Mountain
The famous entrance is only a tiny visible part of the facility. From there, the vault extends more than 100 metres into the mountain to its storage chambers.
The seeds are kept at -18掳C (-0.4掳F) in sealed foil packages, packed into boxes and arranged on shelves. Low temperatures and low humidity dramatically slow the biological processes that cause seeds to age.
Artificial refrigeration maintains the required temperature, but the surrounding rock and permafrost provide an important additional safeguard. Even during a prolonged power failure, the mountain would remain naturally cold.
How long an individual seed remains viable depends greatly on the species. Some require replacement after decades, while others can potentially survive for centuries under ideal conditions.
The result is not a time capsule that can simply be sealed and forgotten. The wider system of genebanks continues to maintain, grow and replace crop collections as necessary.
The Seed Vault Has Already Been Needed
The value of such a backup might sound theoretical. It isn't.
The聽International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, better known as ICARDA, maintained an important genebank near Aleppo in Syria. As the Syrian civil war made the collection inaccessible, ICARDA turned to its backups in Svalbard.
Beginning in 2015, seed samples were withdrawn from the Global Seed Vault and used to rebuild collections in聽Lebanon and Morocco. Once the plants had been grown and new seeds produced, duplicates could once again be returned to Svalbard.
It was an important moment. The famous 鈥渄oomsday vault鈥 wasn't being opened because civilisation had collapsed. It was being used because a regional crisis had endangered an important scientific resource. That's precisely what it was designed for.
When Climate Change Reached the Doomsday Vault
There is an uncomfortable irony to building an Arctic facility designed to survive global crises only to discover that the Arctic itself is changing.

Reports in 2017 revealed that water had entered part of the Seed Vault's access tunnel following unusually warm conditions. Some headlines suggested the doomsday vault had flooded. That wasn't quite what happened.
Water entered the聽outer section of the access tunnel. The storage chambers themselves were not flooded and the seeds were never threatened.
Nevertheless, the incident exposed a weakness in the original design. Permafrost around part of the entrance had not established itself as expected, prompting Norway to carry out substantial improvements to the facility.
A new waterproof access tunnel was among the measures introduced, while equipment capable of producing heat was moved away from the tunnel.
Norway eventually invested approximately聽EUR 20 million聽in the technical upgrade of the facility, considerably more than the approximately EUR 8.3 million originally spent building it.
Rather than proving the Seed Vault had failed, the episode demonstrated something important about planning for centuries into the future. Even a backup system needs to adapt.
Svalbard's Second Doomsday Vault
Seeds preserve genetic information. But what about everything humanity has written, photographed, designed and discovered? That's the thinking behind the聽, which opened in 2017.
The archive is housed approximately 300 metres inside the decommissioned Mine 3, also beneath Plat氓berget near Longyearbyen. Unlike the purpose-built Seed Vault, this really is located inside an old coal mine.
Its goal is to preserve important digital information without depending on conventional computer storage.
Hard drives fail. File formats become obsolete. Servers require electricity. Cloud services depend on vast and complicated technological systems continuing to function. The Arctic World Archive takes a deliberately different approach.
Saving Digital Data on Film
Data deposited in the archive is transferred onto a specially developed photosensitive film known as聽piqlFilm.
Information can be stored digitally or visually in a format designed so that future generations can work out how to retrieve it even if today's technology has disappeared.
The film requires no electricity while sitting in storage and is kept inside protective containers in the cold, dry environment of the mine.
The technology has been tested for a longevity of more than 1,000 years, while the Arctic World Archive now has a target of preserving data for as long as 2,000 years.
There's a pleasing irony to using film to solve one of the problems of the digital age.
Instructions explaining how to decode the information can themselves be stored with the data, reducing reliance on today's software or hardware still existing hundreds of years from now.
What's Stored in the Arctic World Archive?
The collection is wonderfully eclectic. Depositors have included national archives, museums, governments, research organisations and private companies.
Material stored beneath the mountain includes cultural heritage, scientific information, artworks, historical documents and computer software.
Among the organisations represented are the聽Vatican Library, National Museum of Norway, European Space Agency, UNICEF, the national archives of Mexico and Brazil, and GitHub.
GitHub's involvement is especially appropriate for a vault concerned with digital preservation.
Its聽Arctic Code Vault聽project placed a snapshot of public open-source software repositories inside the mountain, providing a remarkable physical backup of some of the code on which our digital world depends.
The organisation behind the archive has changed too. Originally established by Norwegian technology company Piql, the Arctic World Archive became an聽independent, non-profit foundation in 2025, intended to secure its long-term mission beyond the interests of one commercial company.
Can You Visit Svalbard's Doomsday Vaults?
Not exactly. The聽Svalbard Global Seed Vault itself is closed to the public. Only authorised personnel and invited visitors can enter the facility.
However, organised guided tours from Longyearbyen do visit the outside of the vault. Its distinctive concrete entrance has become one of Svalbard's most recognisable modern landmarks.
There's an important practical reason to consider a tour rather than simply setting off on foot. The Seed Vault lies outside Longyearbyen's polar bear safety zone, where travelling without appropriate polar bear protection is not recommended.
It's also possible to get much closer to the story of the Arctic World Archive.
Guided tours of聽Mine 3聽take visitors inside the former coal mine. You can't enter the archive itself, but the tour reaches its entrance and explains both the modern data archive and the earlier seed-storage experiments carried out in the mine.
For anyone interested in Svalbard's transformation from coal mining settlement to centre for science, tourism and long-term preservation, Mine 3 is one of Longyearbyen's most fascinating attractions.
More Than Preparation for Doomsday
Calling them the 鈥渄oomsday vaults鈥 makes for irresistible headlines. But the nickname slightly misses the point. Neither facility was built primarily in expectation of one dramatic, civilisation-ending event.
The Global Seed Vault protects against the gradual and sometimes local loss of agricultural diversity. The Arctic World Archive attempts to protect knowledge and culture from technological failure, deterioration, conflict and the passage of time.
They are insurance policies against聽many small disasters as much as one enormous one. And there is something fitting about their location.
Longyearbyen grew because people came north to extract coal from the mountains. Today, parts of those same mountains are being used for almost the opposite purpose.
Instead of taking something out of Svalbard, we're putting some of humanity's most valuable things inside. And hoping nobody needs them for a very long time.
