I first tasted this in 1994, when I was in Norway. I’ve been “addicted” ever since. I love its creamy caramel taste. Best on most crackers or hearty breads. IKEA KNÄCKEBRÖD FLERKORN or KNÄCKEBRÖD RÅG are a couple of my favorites. Also very good with apples or pears.

I have to say, I never thought of putting it on ice cream, but I must try that!

Available here in the Portland OR area at Fred Meyer supermarkets.

Excellent survey, David. I agree with your recommendation of the Sjöwall-Wahlöö series about Swedish detective Martin Beck. All 10 books are outstanding, especially #4, The Laughing Policeman.

I’m writing a realistic fiction book off of Norway so these comments are helpful, I’m also rapidly learning Norwegian. It’s a long process so what was said here has benefited me. I would love to go to Norway some day and see Stavanger (Norway will play a big part of who I want to be so any tips you can comment for me or any people who I asked questions to answers would be appreciaated) Thank you!

Annoyed, yes 🙂
Norwegians also denote some lakes as fjords, what geologists call fjord-lakes. And several fjord-lakes were in fact salt water fjords some 1000 years ago. Just to maximize the confusion.

For Norwegians, boats and ferries are different things. Ferry (usually synonymous with car ferry) connects roads at either side of a fjord or sound, typically 10 or 20 min crossing as you mention. A boat (usually a high speed catamaran) is a bus on water transporting people between villages and towns. Norwegians will easily be confused if you refer to passenger boats as ferries. Design and purpose of these are quite different. Kystruten (Hurtigruten) is something different too, Norwegians would not usually refer to this as a ferry.

Hello David,
My grief and condolences goes to Skaugum and the royals therein!
Harald and I were the same age with him only 3 months older. Growing up in Vesteraalen, I would tell my friends that Harald and I were almost ‘family’!
After the war ended, the royal family travelled throughout Norway and had parades and my parents took me with them to see such a parade. The red carpet was covering where the royals were to walk . all the royals walked the carpet except one ,Prince(at that time) Olav ,he walked beside the carpet. When young Harald saw what his father did ,he too walked outside!
